Shreveporter Ureka Black, convicted in Caddo District Court early this month of the murder of her infant son and the attempted murder of an older child, was sentenced to life plus 50 years in prison by District Judge Donald E. Hathaway Jr.

She received a life sentence for the death of the infant child and 50 years in prison, at hard labor and successive to the life sentence, for the attack on the older son.

Black’s tender-age sons were thrown into Cross Lake two years ago, killing Joshua, her 10-month-old, and injuring Elijah, then 5, on September 24, 2021.

Black, 34, was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Jason Waltman, Christopher Bowman and Kendra Joseph.

She served as her own advocate, with public defender Elizabeth Gibson serving as her stand-by counsel.

The case was docket No. 385368.
